Traditionally, driving irons like the Srizon ZX MKII Utility or the Ping iCrossover are geared toward better players. Driving irons are less forgiving but when in the right hands, are a powerful tool. A driving iron allows for more workability, shot shapes, and ball flights off the tee and in the fairway.

A more conventional approach is putting a hybrid in the bag - a combination of a fairway wood and a driving iron. Hybrids typically offer a more penetrating ball flight than high-lofted fairway wood and are more forgiving than a driving iron. A properly fit hybrid will traditionally fly higher than a driving iron or long iron. Manufacturers typically offer variations in hybrid heads to accommodate various skill levels as some are more forgiving than others.
